STOP SMOKING - Pulmonary Diseases

You will find information on the harmful effects of the smoking for your health and how to stop smoking in this booklet. Information and suggestions in the booklet will help you and make it easy for you to follow through with your decision only if you are decisive on stopping and willing to stop smoking. Many smoking addicts are able to stop smoking without getting any help. First step to stop smoking is to be confident and determined.

• It is estimated that there are 17 million smokers currently in Turkey.

• Annual smoking related spending goes up to 6.5 billion dollars.

• While 4 million out of 17 million smokers would die losing 7 years, whereas another 4 million would die losing 22 years from their lives.

• Our people spend 8.5 billion dollars in order to buy cigarettes and treat smoking related diseases.


• 70% of tobacco smokers reside in the developing countries.

• In 2025 10 million people in the world will die due to smoking and 7 million of these deaths shall occur in the developing countries.


What are the dangers of smoking?

• Any dose of smoking is hazardous and involve chemical substances that harm every part of the body.

• It is addictive and nicotine is accounted for this effect.

• It harms not only the smoker but also individuals who are exposed to tobacco smoke.

• It is the only legitimate product which is lethal for the consumer.

• It is accounted for 50 different diseases and 20 of them are fatal.

• 35% of death related to all cancer types in men and 15% thereof for women is due to smoking.

Which cancers do smoking lead to?

• Lung cancer

• Mouth-trachea cancer

• Bladder cancer

• Kidney cancer

• Gastric cancer

• Pancreas cancer

• Cervical cancer

• 90% of lung cancer related deaths is caused by smoking. Lung cancer risk is 20 times more when compared to non-smokers.

• Lung cancer risk for non-smokers who have been exposed to tobacco smoke is 3 times more when compared to non-smokers.

• Breast cancer risk is increased for non-smoker females who have been exposed to tobacco smoke.

Is smoking harmful to heart and vascular system?

Yes, it leads to the following diseases:

• Coronary heart disease (heart attack)

• Aortic aneurysm

• Vascular calcinosis

• Paralysis

What are the other diseases caused by smoking?

• Bronchitis

• Pneumonitis

• Stomach and duodenum ulcer

• Smoking is the most significant cause for respiratory tract diseases which results in difficulty in breathing. The mortality rate of these diseases is 40 times higher when compared to non-smokers.

• Miscarriage, premature birth, giving birth to a low-weighted baby, infertility risk is increased for female smokers.

• Smoking is one of the most important factors of impotence in males.

Why is it difficult to stop smoking?

• Nicotine in the tobacco has addictive characteristics and in this sense it is more effective than alcohol and heroin.

• In addition to nicotine addiction smokers may have hand or oral habits. Such habits are positively correlated with the amount of cigarettes smoked in a day.

Which methods are used to stop smoking?

Several methods can be used to stop smoking:

I. Sudden drop, by oneself without receiving any help.

2. Stopping through medical treatment. Medical treatments proved to be effective are applied to people who have a hard time quitting smoking on their own. These are nicotine replacement therapies (nicotine patches, gums, nose spray) medications called (varenicline) and (bupropion). Consult your doctor before starting these medications.

3. Treatment methods which are not clearly declared effective scientifically are acupuncture and hypnosis.

What are the simple ways to help with stopping smoking?

• Do not ever think that you could not stop smoking.

• Specify a day to stop smoking and be decisive on such day.

• Pick up new interests for yourself. If you have hobbies, allocate time to them, take walks.

• Nicotine withdrawal symptoms are temporary and last for 2-3 weeks at most. Hang in there!

• Take walks, go shopping or visit your friends.

• Reward yourself, you may buy a gift.

• Drink a lot of water.

• Stress reliever or a chewing gum may be used in order to overcome oral and hand habits.

• Do not go to places where people are smoking, stay away from your friends who smoke for a while.

• Exercise, take a shower, breathe in and out deeply for 10 times, or eat fruits and vegetables when you want to smoke the most.

• Negative events may encourage you to start smoking again. However, do not forget that smoking would not solve such problems; starting smoking again would in fact challenge your self-esteem.

What are the nicotine withdrawal symptoms?

I. Tension

2. Insomnia

3. Restlessness

4. Difficulty in concentrating on thoughts

5. Anger

6. Tiredness

7. Headache

8. Tremors

9. Dry mouth

10. Increase in appetite

11. Coughing

What should be done against these symptoms?

• You can go for a walk or spend time for your hobbies in case of restlessness or tension.

• Do not drink tea or coffee when you go to bed to avoid insomnia, but you may drink warm milk. Drink a lot of water and chew gum for dry mouth.

Can smoking be stopped gradually?


Can I smoke one or two cigarettes occasionally when I stop smoking?

• NO. Never think as what could one cigarette do.

• Each cigarette you smoke would increase the risk of you to pick up smoking again.

• Do not be fall into l can stop whenever I want self-deception.

Will I gain weight after I stop smoking?

• An increase of 3-5 kilograms is expected in people who have stopped smoking. In order to avoid more increase, avoid eating high calorie food (crisps, dried nuts) and exercise.

How long will it take me to fully recover after I stop smoking?

Your health condition minutes, hours and years after you stop smoking:

20th minute: Pulse, blood pressure, body temperature returns to normal

8th hour: Blood oxygen level returns to normal, nicotine level is halved.

24th hour: Carbon monoxide gas (exhaust fume) is completely cleared from the blood.

48th hour: There is no nicotine is left in the body. Senses like taste and smelling rejuvenate.

72nd hour: Breathing returns to normal, bronchus relax.

2- 12 weeks: Coughing will decrease and fade away in 3 months. Breathing becomes easier. Your immune system starts to gain strength. Yellow spots on your teeth and fingers disappear.

1st year: Your heart attack risk decreases by 50% at the end of the first year. The risk of brain hemorrhage and vascular diseases in the legs decreases by 30-50%. Occurrence of lung diseases which lead to respiratory failure is prevented, respiration functions improve.

5th year: Mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder cancer risk drops to half

10th year: Risk of a stroke go down to the level of non-smokers.

15th year: Risk of lung, kidney and pancreas cancer decreases. Heart attack rate goes down to non-smoker's level.

What are the benefits for my child when I stop smoking?

• You would set a good example to your child and decrease his/her risk of contracting diseases such as sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infection and asthma by releasing him/her from being a passive smoker.

• Your child would not be premature or have low birth weight.

What should I do to avoid smoking again?

• Remind yourself that you have stopped smoking at every change you have.

• Stay away from smoking free environments and your smoker friends.

• Take deep breaths, drink water and exercise when you desire to smoke very much.

• Always reward yourself when you accomplish not smoking.

• There you have proven that you can be without smoking!!! This means that you do not need smoking and you have shown that you can stop smoking. Only thing left to do is continue not smoking.
